What’s in my Park Bag: Disney vs. Universal

One of the questions I get asked most often as a theme park travel advisor is: “What do you bring into the parks with you?” The answer depends on where I’m going—because Disney and Universal handle bags very differently.

Disney Parks: Pack Light, Ride Easy

At Walt Disney World and Disneyland, you can bring a small bag on almost every ride. That means I don’t have to think about lockers or leaving items behind, which makes life much easier. My Disney park bag usually includes:

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Portable charger and cord
  • Hand sanitizer
  • A lightweight poncho (because Florida rain loves to surprise us)
  • ID and a credit card in a slim wallet
  • Moleskin padding for blisters
  • A small pill case with stomach and pain meds
  • A velcro cord wrap to hold my ears on my bag

I used to carry a refillable water bottle, but I’ve stopped. To lighten my load, I now just ask for complimentary ice water at quick-service restaurants. It’s cold, refreshing, and saves me from carrying around the extra weight.

Universal Parks: Lockers Change the Game

Universal is a different story. Many of the big attractions—like The Incredible Hulk Coaster or Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey—require you to stow your bag in a locker before riding. While the lockers are free for the duration of your ride, the process can be time-consuming, which means I think carefully about what I pack.

My Universal park bag is smaller–a runner’s belt bag–and pared down to the essentials:

  • Phone, ID, and cards (often in a lanyard or slim wallet)
  • Sunglasses
  • Travel-size sunscreen
  • Poncho

Since I’ll be in and out of lockers all day, I avoid bringing too many extras. For water, I either purchase a drink in the park or grab water at dining locations when I take a break.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re heading to Disney or Universal, the key is to pack light and only bring what you’ll truly use. Disney makes it easy to carry a bag all day, while Universal’s locker system encourages you to simplify. Knowing the difference before you go will save you a lot of hassle—and keep your park days stress-free and fun.
