Do you ever wonder when you’re most likely to get extra value on a vacation you were already considering? One of the best windows of the year is wave season.
Wave season typically runs from January through March, and while it’s often talked about as “deal season,” what really makes it special is the flexibility cruise lines and vacation suppliers have to add value. This is when we’re most likely to see things like onboard credits, reduced deposits, room upgrades, included amenities, or promotional pricing layered onto the right itinerary—not just whatever happens to be on sale.
Cruise lines originally created wave season to encourage early bookings for spring and summer sailings, and it’s still one of the best times to book a cruise. But the real advantage isn’t just lower fares—it’s leverage. During wave season, cruise lines are more willing to enhance an offer to make it fit a traveler’s needs, whether that’s a family-friendly sailing, an adults-only escape, an expedition-style cruise, or a voyage focused on culture and learning.
And cruises aren’t the only winners during wave season. All-inclusive resorts, theme park vacations, and guided tour packages often roll out limited-time perks during this same period. Sometimes that means discounted rates; other times it means added nights, resort credits, dining packages, or exclusive experiences that wouldn’t be included later in the year.
The key to making wave season work in your favor is planning with intention. Booking early gives you the best selection of cabins, rooms, and travel dates, while also leaving room to adjust if better perks become available. Flexibility helps, too—certain dates, itineraries, or room categories may unlock stronger offers than others.
This is also where working with a travel advisor really pays off. During wave season, my role isn’t just to find a promotion—it’s to match the right promotion to the right trip, and to see whether we can add extra features or savings beyond what you’d find on your own. Often, that means getting more value for the same budget, rather than simply choosing the cheapest option.
If you’re thinking about travel this year, wave season is the perfect time to start the conversation. Let’s talk through what kind of trip fits you best—and see how we can make it even better. Schedule your free 30-minute Vacation Planning Session now!
